Obedience to God and Who God Is

    Read: Deuteronomy 10:12-13

    • In one sense, God’s requirements of us are quite simple: fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him, obey His commands.
    • All these things are facets of one thing: a growing personal relationship with the God who has already demonstrated his unflinching commitment to our best interests.
    • The more we realize in our thinking and experience that God always seeks our good, the more we will be willing to trust and obey Him in what He asks us to do and to avoid.

    Personal Development: Obedience to God

    Read: 1 Samuel 15:1-23

    • A godly leader’s commitment to God should be such that he or she will obey Him no matter what he or she is offered to compromise.
    • To obey is better than sacrifice.
    • God doesn’t want ours, He wants us. Because when God has us, He also has ours.
    • Ask yourself, “What’s my price? What would it take for me to disobey God?” Hopefully, your commitment is nonnegotiable.
    • Such commitment is crucial element in the character of a leader.

Passage to memorize this week

Psalm 119:97-101

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.  I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word.

    Integrity and What I Do

    Read: 1 Chronicles 29:10-19

    • Take heed to yourselves, lest your example contradict your doctrine, and lest you lay such stumbling-blocks before the blind, as may be the occasion of their ruin; lest you unsay with your lives, what you say with your tongues; and be the greatest hinderers of the success of your own labors. It much hindereth our work, when other men are all the week long contradicting to poor people in private, that which we have been speaking to them from the Word of God in public……but it will much more hinder your work, if you contradict yourselves, and if your actions give your tongue the lie, and if you build up an hour or two with your mouths and all the week after pull down with your hands……He that means as he speaks, will surely do as he speaks. (Baxter, Richard. The Reformed Pastor)
    • This old English “pastor to pastors” has a wise word for any leader who wants to encourage his or her followers to “do it right.” Read his quote again and think about the implications for your own life as a leader with integrity.

    Integrity and How It Works

    Read: Samuel

    • Samuel’s life life reflects the story of an intimate God-with-man relationship.
    • Samuel realized the importance of servant leadership and warned against the dangers of a leadership that defines itself by its privilege and power to live off the efforts of those who are led.
    • Samuel was a great leader because he understood leadership as an opportunity to serve people and add quality to their life. He abhorred a leadership that used its power to exploit the led for personal gain and position.
    • Leadership for Samuel was a stewardship, a responsibility, and honor. He demonstrated integrity because it was not his intention to demonstrate integrity. He was honest because his intention was not to be known as an honest man. He was fair and just because he wasn’t thinking about developing his reputation as an honest and just man. He was thinking about honoring God and serving God’s people. He wasn’t living to build a reputation. His higher calling and focus resulted in those things.

    Integrity and Who I Am

    Read: Psalms 32:1-11

    • God himself referred to David as a man who walked “in integrity of heart” (1 Kings 9:4), whose heart was “fully devoted to the Lord his God” (1 Kings 11:4) and who “followed the Lord completely” (1 Kings 11:6). David’s psalms teach obedience to God.
    • David has integrity because he consistently held to the same standard. When he wrote about that standard, he meant it. When he violated it, he called it sin—he never glossed it over, made excuses or took it lightly.
    • Integrity doesn’t demand perfection. Integrity doesn’t guarantee a perfect life, but it does require an integrated life.
    • People with integrity have a moral center that integrates their behavior. When they violate that moral center, they recognize that violation as sin and treat it as an aberration. They confess it, make restitution, seek forgiveness and reconfirm the standard.

    Integrity and Who God Is

    Read: Matthew 6:1-34

    • We must wrestle to the ground if we hope to increase our level of integrity.
    • Integrity requires more than a commitment to itself.
    • Jesus warned against doing right things for wrong reasons—things such as trying to develop integrity only because it will advance our career or help us to close a deal. Jesus called people who practice this kind of morality “hypocrites”.
    • The essence of hypocrisy (lack of integrity) is public-dependent behavior. It is acting one way if people are watching but another when alone.
    • Jesus’ key to integrity is that His followers will live their lives by the standard of their unchanging, ever-present heavenly Father. Resist the temptation to dance to every vendor’s tune; instead, march to the steady beat set by our Almighty God.
    • Integrity involves living by one standard and for the approval of one Judge. People come and go, and their standards are fickle. Trying to please all of them will at best drive you nuts and at worst turn you into a hypocrite. But God is unchanging and always present. Living for Him is foundational to integrity—and it reaps an eternal reward.

    Personal Development: Integrity

    Read: 1 Samuel 12:1-4

    • Key to Integrity: Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. (verse 24)
    • Our plan: ……as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Passage to memorize this week

1 Timothy 4:15-16

Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
