Personal Development: Obedience to God
Read: 1 Samuel 15:1-23

A godly leader’s commitment to God should be such that he or she will obey Him no matter what he or she is offered to compromise.

To obey is better than sacrifice.

Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20 And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me.
A godly leader’s commitment to God should be such that he or she will obey Him no matter what he or she is offered to compromise.

To obey is better than sacrifice.

God doesn’t want ours, He wants us. Because when God has us, He also has ours.

Ask yourself, “What’s my price? What would it take for me to disobey God?” Hopefully, your commitment is nonnegotiable.

Such commitment is crucial element in the character of a leader.

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word.

And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were.

Take heed to yourselves, lest your example contradict your doctrine, and lest you lay such stumbling-blocks before the blind, as may be the occasion of their ruin; lest you unsay with your lives, what you say with your tongues; and be the greatest hinderers of the success of your own labors. It much hindereth our work, when other men are all the week long contradicting to poor people in private, that which we have been speaking to them from the Word of God in public……but it will much more hinder your work, if you contradict yourselves, and if your actions give your tongue the lie, and if you build up an hour or two with your mouths and all the week after pull down with your hands……He that means as he speaks, will surely do as he speaks. (Baxter, Richard. The Reformed Pastor)

This old English “pastor to pastors” has a wise word for any leader who wants to encourage his or her followers to “do it right.” Read his quote again and think about the implications for your own life as a leader with integrity.

Integrity and How It Works

Read: Samuel

Samuel’s life life reflects the story of an intimate God-with-man relationship.

Samuel realized the importance of servant leadership and warned against the dangers of a leadership that defines itself by its privilege and power to live off the efforts of those who are led.

Samuel was a great leader because he understood leadership as an opportunity to serve people and add quality to their life. He abhorred a leadership that used its power to exploit the led for personal gain and position.

Leadership for Samuel was a stewardship, a responsibility, and honor. He demonstrated integrity because it was not his intention to demonstrate integrity. He was honest because his intention was not to be known as an honest man. He was fair and just because he wasn’t thinking about developing his reputation as an honest and just man. He was thinking about honoring God and serving God’s people. He wasn’t living to build a reputation. His higher calling and focus resulted in those things.
