    Courage/Risk-taking and What I Do

    Read John 2:12-22

    • When Jesus cleared the temple he gave a powerful example of both courage and risk-taking that came from the wellspring of deep conviction.
    • Having the faith to attempt something new or different even though it might be hard or lead to failure. (Henry Lee Allen)
    • Risk is not recklessness; recklessness involves little or no forethought…In contrast, those who take risks are aware that they face enormous obstacles to achievement; yet, the rewards seem well worth the effort.
    • Strong leaders boldly take calculated risks. They must do so in order to advance their cause.
    • As you cultivate your leadership skills, don’t be afraid to take a calculated risk. And don’t fear failure. Both are back doors to success.

    Courage/Risk-taking and How It Works

    Read Ezekiel 28:6-10

    • Good leaders “fix what’s broke.” Great leaders “fix what (to others) isn’t broke.”
    • Ezekiel demonstrated a rare kind of courage in confronting the immorality of the highly successful king of Tyre. We admire someone who stands strong under pressure.  We cheer the leader who points out errors in the struggling department and makes it improve. But who goes into a division that’s blowing the doors off and tells them to clean up their act?
    • It takes courage to stand firm when attacked. It takes courage to risk people’s retaliation by making them fix what’s broken.
    • But following Ezekiel into the plush office of the powerful king to confront him with his sin requires another kind of courage—the courage that comes from godly conviction and the Spirit’s prompting.
    • Great leaders exhibit great courage by consistently addressing problems no matter where whey are, what they are or who has them.
    • As Ezekiel demonstrates, this level of courage comes from firmly held conviction.
    • Unless a leader believes unequivocally in what he or she is doing, that leader will not exhibit this kind of courage.
    • “I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.”
    • Great conviction about great truth breeds great courage.

    Courage/Risk-taking and Who I Am

    Read Numbers 14:1-10

    • Leadership, by its very nature, inspires people to move in directions they would not otherwise have been willing to take.
    • From time to time, good leadership requires excursions into unexplored territory, and draws on a leader’s courage.
    • Obedience to the precepts and principles of Scripture does in fact require significant risk, because to trust God is to pursue the invisible over the visible.
    • Hebrews 4:2    For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.
    • Joshua 1:9    Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
    • Knowing this, God asks His people to take the step of faith and trust in His presence. God is the ultimate source of empowerment; He is the eternal source of the godly leader’s courage.

    Courage/Risk-taking and Who God Is

    Read: Hebrews 6:13-20

    • In this world, nothing appears to be certain. Our sense of being in control is only an illusion. We cannot control the outcome of even a single day.
    • There is only One who exercises sovereign control.
    • There are two reasons why God’s promises are certain:
    1. the unchanging nature of His purpose
    2. the fact that He cannot break His covenant.
    • The only stable and unqualified ground of hope is the immutable character of God and the promises that flow out of His character.
    • We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
    • It takes real courage for us to risk everything on the promises of God—at least those who hope in the promises of the world have something tangible and visible to bolster their confidence. But those who hope in God’s promises are staking their lives on what is not seen and what is not yet.
    • Romans 8:24-25   For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
    • Hebrews 11:1   Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

    Personal Development: Courage/Risk-taking

    Read Joshua 1:1-9

    • God realized Joshua’s need for courage and gave him guidance that would strengthen his faith.
    1. First, God reminded Joshua of His faithfulness to keep all of His promises.
    2. Second, God commanded Joshua to meditate on His words that Moses recorded in the five books of the Pentateuch.
    3. Third, God promised to be personally present with Joshua.
    • The same sources of courage that empowered Joshua are available today for any leader who will accept them. When faced with a risky business decision, the godly leader will look to God in prayer and to God’s revealed Word for the perspective and courage needed to make the right choice.

Passage to memorize this week

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
