Obedience to God and Who God Is

    Read: Deuteronomy 10:12-13

    • In one sense, God’s requirements of us are quite simple: fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him, obey His commands.
    • All these things are facets of one thing: a growing personal relationship with the God who has already demonstrated his unflinching commitment to our best interests.
    • The more we realize in our thinking and experience that God always seeks our good, the more we will be willing to trust and obey Him in what He asks us to do and to avoid.

    Integrity and Who God Is

    Read: Matthew 6:1-34

    • We must wrestle to the ground if we hope to increase our level of integrity.
    • Integrity requires more than a commitment to itself.
    • Jesus warned against doing right things for wrong reasons—things such as trying to develop integrity only because it will advance our career or help us to close a deal. Jesus called people who practice this kind of morality “hypocrites”.
    • The essence of hypocrisy (lack of integrity) is public-dependent behavior. It is acting one way if people are watching but another when alone.
    • Jesus’ key to integrity is that His followers will live their lives by the standard of their unchanging, ever-present heavenly Father. Resist the temptation to dance to every vendor’s tune; instead, march to the steady beat set by our Almighty God.
    • Integrity involves living by one standard and for the approval of one Judge. People come and go, and their standards are fickle. Trying to please all of them will at best drive you nuts and at worst turn you into a hypocrite. But God is unchanging and always present. Living for Him is foundational to integrity—and it reaps an eternal reward.

    Integrity and Who God Is

    Read: Hebrews 13:8

    • God will never let us down, because he never changes. His promises are as good as His unchanging character.
    • God’s character never changes; Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. His love, His truth and His goodness are not governed by external circumstances or conditions—they never vacillate.
    • Therefore, God’s character and the promises He makes are supremely worthy of our trust and commitment. He does what He says, and His covenant love is always dependable.
    • God is the ultimately reliable source of hope. His changeless character is the foundation of all of His promises. Whatever He says He will do is as good as done. When we hope in His promises, this hope becomes an anchor for the soul, both firm and secure (6:19).
    • God’s yes is always yes, and His no is always no (James 5:12); His actions flow perfectly out of His character.
    • There will be no possibility of manipulating, or bribing or bargaining with us if we never compromise our integrity.
    • He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or changes His mind; for He is not a man, that he should change His mind (1 Samuel 15:29).
    • God Himself has testified, “I the LORD do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

The Learning Organization and Who God Is

    Read: 1 Peter 1:10-12

    • A lengthy process of development and learning is necessary before people are ready to tackle more sophisticated subjects.
    • In a similar way, God gives us greater amounts of illumination as we respond to the light we have already received.
    • God’s Word is a progressive revelation in which clearer and fuller insights concerning the person and work of God were communicated in a gradual and dynamic way.
    • God is the master pedagogue—He knows the right time to communicate the next lesson.
    • There is no point in conveying additional light if a group or a person does not have the capacity to receive it or has not responded appropriately to the light that has already been given.
    • Romans 15:4—For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
    • 1 Corinthians 10:11—Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

    Courage/Risk-taking and Who God Is

    Read: Hebrews 6:13-20

    • In this world, nothing appears to be certain. Our sense of being in control is only an illusion. We cannot control the outcome of even a single day.
    • There is only One who exercises sovereign control.
    • There are two reasons why God’s promises are certain:
    1. the unchanging nature of His purpose
    2. the fact that He cannot break His covenant.
    • The only stable and unqualified ground of hope is the immutable character of God and the promises that flow out of His character.
    • We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
    • It takes real courage for us to risk everything on the promises of God—at least those who hope in the promises of the world have something tangible and visible to bolster their confidence. But those who hope in God’s promises are staking their lives on what is not seen and what is not yet.
    • Romans 8:24-25   For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
    • Hebrews 11:1   Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

    Structure/Organization and Who God Is

    Read: Revelation 4:2-11

    • The created order of the universe is replete with evidence of intelligent design.
    • God of the bible uses structure and organization to accomplish His many purposes.
    • Revelation 4:2-11 furnishes us with a glimpse of the degree of symmetry and hierarchical order that surrounds the manifest presence of the eternal God.
    • God’s penchant for structure, beauty, and harmony is also suggested in Paul’s description of Christ as the Creator and Sustainer of all things: Colossians 1:16-17. Notice how the words thrones, powers, rulers and authorities are used in this passage to portray the angelic hierarchy.
    • Christ integrates, orders and sustains all things.
    • Consider Genesis 1:1-2:3 from the standpoint of creation’s structure and organization.  In what ways does God change chaos into order?

Long-range Planning and Who God Is

    Read Isaiah 37:26

    • God’s active involvement in the affairs of people and nations is not capricious or reactive but purposeful and deliberate. His timing is perfect, and His purpose cannot be thwarted.
    • God’s sovereign intentions exceed the boundaries of time and are consistent with the perfection of His character.
    • God works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will.
